The Borrowed Idea

In 2010, my friend Al decided he wanted to get out, see the world, try new things, that sort of stuff.  So he made a list of 100ish things and vowed to average doing one a week for a year (hence the 52).  It was awesome, and he blogs about it here.

In 2011, I decided to give his idea a try, and it has changed my life.  Literally.  At the time I was working full-time in Chicago, going about life in a fairly enjoyable way, but I noticed that "I would love to do that someday!" or some other version of that sentence came out of my life a lot.  And then I'd never do those things.  Even the simplest of those things.  After that year, I was living in San Diego, working on my PhD in Leadership Studies, and proactively going out and doing the things I'd always -- or just recently -- wanted to do.

52 was quite a clip, so I've decreased my annual goal to 12 (one a month).  Each year's list is still 100 items that sometimes continue, build, or are completely different than the year before.

At the top of the page, you can see the list I've created for each year.  The ones that I accomplished include links to those posts.

On the right-hand side of my blog, you can see a list titled "Thank You!"  There I have the blog posts labeled by year as well as by the people who have so generously helped me or joined me as I cross things off my list.  I would never have accomplished so many of these goals without them.

Lower down on the right-hand side there is a list of blogs from friends of mine who have taken this idea and made it their own too.  They inspire me, and it's so fun to check in on each other's adventures.

Enjoy the struggle.
